"Hurrah!" Johnnie Green shouted. And he dashed out of the woodshed and ran to the barnyard as fast as he could scamper. There was a good reason for his high spirits and his haste. His father had just told him he might have a lamb for a pet.

The Tale of Snowball Lamb Arthur Scott Bailey 9781523875528 Books

I loaded "The Tale of Snowball Lamb" onto my Kindle after finding all of Arthur Scott Bailey's books on a list of recommended books for kindergarteners. I was not sure how my daughter (4) would respond to it, since she had not yet been exposed to books without pictures. But it is free, so I figured it couldn't hurt. When I started reading it to her, she was mesmerized! She actually kept begging me to read more! We both found ourselves laughing hysterically at Snowball's antics. We loved the book so much that I downloaded more of Arthur Scott Bailey's books onto my Kindle, and plan to eventually "purchase" all of them. They are that good. We have read a few of his books now, and all of them have been equally enjoyable. As a mom, I consider Bailey to be a master at weaving the "personalities," characteristics, and mannerisms of the various animals he writes about into fun characters that young children can relate to and learn from. Thanks to Arthur Scott Bailey, my child knows that some hens like to hide their eggs in random places, that a hermit thrush builds its nest on the ground and a whip-poor-will sings at night, that robins fly the same exact route every fall and spring when they migrate, that sheep like salt and if one sheep bolts, all will follow where it leads, and that sheep are very much creatures of habit to the extent that it is nearly impossible for them to break habits they have learned. How many four year olds know stuff like this? Even I am learning things from these books! I wouldn't recommend these books for a child younger than four though. My two year old could care less about theses stories. But then, he's a very active boy who rarely sits still through an entire story regardless of whether or not it has pictures. I will be using these books as part of our homeschool science "curriculum" through kindergarten and the elementary years.
